Ride in metre-deep powder snow

A completely calm forest with white frost in the trees and metre-deep powder snow. The temperature has dropped to 20 degrees below zero. Perfect for a multi-day riding tour in the wilderness. The horses go out year-round – well-trained and eager thoroughbreds with a thick winter coat, which shouldn’t be tugged on unnecessarily. They know how to get through the metre-deep snow, climb leisurely up inclines and can gallop for kilometre after kilometre if you let them choose the speed.

Clothes, food and drink are tied onto wide western saddles. At night, the iron stove heats the tiny cabin, which is both kitchen and bedroom. Roughly hewn benches and soft reindeer skins. Mamma Elsy’s diced pork pancake for lunch. Chili con carne with plenty of habanero for dinner.

Cowboy romanticism thrives in the Norrbotten taiga just outside of Älvsbyn.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Activity: Winter riding
  • Location: Älvsbyn
  • Season: You can ride year-round, but winter riding is possible from November to April.
  • Degree of difficulty: There are tours for everyone – from beginner to experienced rider.
  • Other facts: When it comes to winter riding, teamwork is important. The horses make their way with willpower and strength when the snow is metre-deep. If the snow gets too deep, the rider has to put on his/her snowshoes and lead the horse. You must make your way together, regardless of the terrain, temperature or weather.
